Autumn

The change of seasons has been really dramatic this year. last year we saw days in the 60’s throughout fall, into November. October started out the same this year, until the lows dipped to 20 degrees one night. The frost killed my tomatoes and basil in one fell swoop. The maple and oak leaves went from spectacular fall color to brown overnight. Since then, the days have been chilly and often rainy. The nights have been clear and frosty, causing the grass to crunch early in the morning.

I am not complaining. The quick change has been rather refreshing. It has taken us from long hours tending the yard and garden, baseball games, and biking, to afternoon naps and thoughts of a roaring fire and a good book. The tempo of summer is sprinting in an effort to grasp every ray the sunshine and warmth. The tempo of autumn is ambling from the last sunny spot in the yard, to the comfy chair beside the fire. I am not wise enough to make this transition on my own, and am feeling joyful that nature has made it for me.
